I came to Kasisi on the 4th of March 2009 and
was busy straight away. TV crews from all over Europe had come
to film the High Commisioner of the European Union give a speech
on development. There was also one young student from each
European country here to see Zambia and the wonderful place that
is Kasisi Children’s home.
There was no better way however to meet the
other volunteers, the children and the sisters all working
together to rightly show-off Kasisi.
I have spent most of my time here with the younger boys from St
Martins and with the older boys, or as they like to be called,
“The Don Bosco Boys”. I gave lessons in English, geography
or/and maths to the younger boys every morning, which has been
great fun.
They’re very lively and energetic and,
something I have noticed in all the children here, very eager to
learn. Their eagerness to learn is something I feel many
children lack in my world and it was such a great thing to see.
With the older boys I taught guitar, piano
and Ukalele, and of course played football, chatted and hung out
with them. I enjoyed this immensely, and it was my favourite
thing about Kasisi life. They’re all a fantastic bunch; joking
all the time, sharing stories, asking questions, singing,
dancing and watching the brilliant Jacob do summersaults with
apparent ease, I will miss them all very much…
What else can I say? The whole orphanage is
amazing; The sisters do an incredible job looking after all the
children and me, for which I’m very grateful, the mammies, Mr.
Paul, Mr. Daka, outside help, and the other volunteers make the
Kasisi childrens home a wonderful place to be!
